Message From the Dean
Welcome to the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) at the University of Florida. CALS is the fourth largest college on the University of Florida campus with over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Nationally, CALS ranks fifth at the undergraduate level and fourth at the graduate level. Students choose from 23 different majors with over 100 different specializations and emphasis areas.
As the academic programs component of the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), CALS is dedicated to developing society-ready graduates who are equipped to meet the demands of today�s increasingly complex job market and changing societal needs. The curricula are designed to prepare students for careers or to continue their education in graduate school or professional schools such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, physician assistant. Our record of placing students into graduate and professional schools is superb. Employment opportunities are plentiful in most fields of study.
The University of Florida is a premiere teaching and research university and ranks among the very best universities in the nation. CALS has a unique combination of an outstanding faculty and a student body of the highest quality. CALS is a student oriented college with a size that permits individual attention and experiential learning. Our students are taught by an internationally acclaimed faculty, three of whom are members of the National Academy of Sciences.
Prior to graduation, it is our goal that all students are:
- Involved in an international experience,
- Participate in an internship or research experience,
- Actively engage in clubs and other extra curricular activities to develop leadership abilities, and
- Involved in volunteer services .
- Develop leadership skills and experiences
It is an exciting time to study in CALS because the 21st century will be characterized by a life sciences revolution, with major discoveries in genetics and molecular and cellular biology. These discoveries will revolutionize our understanding of plants, animals, and ecosystems.
